Cathy Silverman

Cathy has been a student of indigenous culture and music for over15 years. She has performed and studied Ewe music from Ghana and Balinese gamelan music, and has performed with various indigenous music groups, including the Tuvan throatsinging group "Huun-Huur-Tu." Cathy received a B.A. in International Relations from Mary Washington College and an M.F.A. in Music Composition from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been shown at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), the Contemporary Arts Collective in Las Vegas, and California Institute of the Arts. She has been the videographer of such artists as Lou Harrison and the Javanese gamelan, Taos Pueblo Robert Mirabal, "Huun-Huur-Tu", the Aztec Music and Dance Ensemble, among many others. Cathy served as the project coordinator for The InterCultural Arts Project at the California Institute of the Arts before her current position as institute coordinator at CalArts, where she is also the chairperson for the Diversity Committee. She is a member of The Foundation for Shamanic Studies and has completed the foundation's Basic Workshop. Cathy is currently a grant recipient of The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. to document and analyze the connections between 'Indigenous Music, Ecosystems & the Peoples of the Americas'.
