Our First Photo Exhibit

The last week of the photo workshop the participants worked hard to plan and execute the final part of the workshop – the exhibit. Over 100 people were invited from the community and the Honduran NGO network. Each participant signed up for a specific committee and had an important role in the creation and execution of the exhibit – a process through which specific leaders clearly emerged. They organized meetings at the house, used the computer to coordinate their plans and tasks, and worked individually with CEN staff to get things approved and accomplished. They did most of the planning and designing of the materials that were to be displayed. This allowed them the opportunity to use the computer and printer for different purposes.

During the exhibit, the kids enjoyed hosting their family and friends. People generally came to the CEDIF at the beginning of the event, looked around at the pictures and displays, then sat and talked in family groups.

We had a short presentation during which Santa Melendez, Director of ANDAR, Sarah Amman and some of the participants welcomed the guests and explained the project. The presentation concluded with awarding certificates to all of the participants and, finally, distributing a typical plate of food – carne asada, rice, potato salad and tortillas. Of those in the exhibit, we selected five photos to highlight in the newsletter. Each includes a reflection written by the respective artist.

Muchachas

Muchachas

Bessy Carolina Maradiaga

What I like about this picture is that it is in black and white. The girls look much more dramatic in black and white and also because they all are smiling and look so happy. This picture represents a lot about my community, which is a rather poor community but at the same time humble and loving.

The workshops that we received were a lot of fun and we all are so happy to have received them. We learned a lot about many different skills that go along with taking pictures like – texture, black and white, colors, focus, light, interesting subject position and so many more. We also learned other important things in the workshops. Many of the young people participating had never even been close to a computer before, but now we all have had experience using Sara, Deborah and Sarah's computers. We also learned to print the photos that we had taken. So thanks to this workshop we who participated now have a pretty good idea of how to take and print pictures with digital cameras.

I like this photo because it is a good representation of one of the skills that we were taught in the workshops – black and white pictures. I also like it because the animals that are in the picture look so beautiful. And finally it I like how the picture is taken from above and the placement of the subject is interesting. I believe that this picture represents me because I really like animals. Also it is a good black and white picture. Also it represents the community of Cedeño because the animals that are in the picture are typical of life here.

The workshops were an incredible experience for me, because I learned a lot about digital cameras. Also the dynamics of the large group were great, plus I enjoyed all the different activities that we did!

I like this picture because it is a good example of one of the skills that we learned in the workshop – lines. I like it because the lines of the wood of the bridge draw you into the picture. The picture represents a bridge that all the students that study in the Isla know very well, because every time we have to go to classes we have to cross over it.

The digital camera workshop was a great fortune for all of us and especially me because we learned a lot about using digital cameras. Although what I learned in the workshops was great, I also want to thank those who gave the workshops because they gave of their time and showed us kindness. I truly appreciate having the opportunity to be part of the digital camera workshop.

El Mar

El Mar

Denia Yolibeth Guevara

I like this picture because of how the colors showed up in it. I also like the way it was taken – slightly tilted and that the horizon line is not in the center of the picture. This photo represents one of the most beautiful resources that we have here in the Cedeño – the ocean. Many people come here to the beach with their families to spend the day swimming. I like the fact that people like to come to Cedeño to the beach.

The workshops were great for me. I learned a lot about photography and different ways to take pictures. I also liked that fact that we had a lot of fun during the workshops and also when we would go to the house during the cohort time. I also liked at the exhibit when we received certificates – it was very beautiful. I want to thank them for everything they did for us.

Un Día Típico a la Playa

Un Dia Tipico

Nohemy Flores Soriano

I like this picture because it shows the beautiful view of the coconut trees and also because it is clear and in good focus. Also I like it because it is the perfect picture representing Cedeño because it shows the beach. The photo represents the beauty of the ocean, the fruit of the trees that we have here in Cedeño. It shows one of the work options that exist here in Cedeño, which is fishing. And everyone loves eating fresh fish from the ocean.

The workshops were such a great experience, because I learned so many things that I did not know before about taking pictures. I also learned about the importance of having photos – not just to have them as a memory, but because they show the feelings of the people, how beautiful nature can be and the animals. It was wonderful to learn so much and also it was a great experience to work with my classmates.

Here are a few more images from the exhibit that capture something of our community...
